Today's Reel under the microscope is a new psychological thriller called Run Rabbit Run, which was released to Netflix June 28th, 2023. It's also being deemed as Maternal Horror. Which makes sense with this Australian-made flick.
A struggling mother, Sarah (Sarah Snook) is trying to cope with a death in the family, all while being the single parent to her 7-year-old daughter, Mia (Lily Latorre). Things are hard enough, and then Mia begins to imitate Sarah's missing sister, Alice. Alice has been missing for 20+ years...
Run Rabbit Run had an interesting take on the possession angle mixed with a sprinkle of the reincarnation conversation. Also touched on mental health. There were some creepy segments of the movie, as Mia acted in a way that, as a parent, would've had me spooked out of my britches. The daughter was straight up eerie beyond means, at times.
I love a good slow burn, but one of the downsides to
Run Rabbit Run might be that it is too slow of a plod for some audiences. The pace did help build suspense and intensity, and there was a lot of broody moody music, but it missed the mark.
And, as the title of the movie recommends, there's a lot of running in the movie. A lot of Sarah chasing Mia around, or running outside trying to find her daughter. I felt like the same scene was on repeat for the last half of the movie as the same events played out again and again.
Sarah continually made horrible parenting choices. Such as, leaving her 7-year-old alone at the old creepy house with a massive cliff right next to it and then proceeding to yelling at Mia for leaving the house.
There's a good reveal near the end of the film that helped boost its strength and, in the end, it wasn't that bad of a movie. I just found myself annoyed with the characters and the pace didn't work me this time.
I give it a 2.5 Bloody Reels out of 5.0.
